Effective in Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests & Pawnee National Grassland

In order to address environmental resource concerns and safety as of Dec. 28, 2009, people shooting for recreation on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland are required to use cardboard targets, paper targets, manufactured metallic targets, or thrown-type clay targets and while shooting, must not possess an open container of an alcoholic beverage as defined by Colorado State law.

“Shooting sport’s activities are a legitimate use of National Forest System lands, and we believe this order will help make shooting more sustainable and environmentally friendly, while increasing shooter and public safety,” Forest Supervisor Glenn Casamassa said.

People with a USDA Forest Service Permit specifically authorizing this prohibited act; federal, state, local officers or members of an organized rescue or fire fighting force performing an official duty; and persons possessing a valid Colorado hunting license lawfully involved in hunting are exempt from the new order.
