Gilpin Girls blast through last track competition

Susan Ball

05/15/2008 - The Gilpin County Track team’s last track meet was their regional meet held in Limon. This is the meet that gave them one last chance to qualify for state. You know the saying about the Colorado weather "just wait five minutes and you will have totally different weather"? Well to say the least, that is exactly what these girls endured. They ran against the very high winds, sleet, snow, freezing rain and also waited during the weather delays through out the day, but by the end of the day they were able to finish their races.

Despite the fact that the winds slowed down the runners times and they did not qualify for state, two of the girls did place at Regionals.

Senior Sara Vaughn placed 7th in the long jump with 13 feet, 4 inches and placed 7th in the 400m with a time of 1:17.9 and she ran the 100m in 14.70.

Freshman Ciara Ryan-Todd placed 8th in the 400m with a time of 1:18. She ran her best time in the 100m hurdles with a time of 18.9, and ran the 200m with a time of 30.9.

Freshman Stephanie Pilcher threw her best shot put at 22 feet 7.5 inches, her long jump was 10 feet 11.5 inches, and she ran the 100m with a time of 16.5.

Freshman Megan Ball ran the 100m hurdles with the time of 20.58, ran the 100m with the time of 15.4, and threw the shot put at 21 feet 5 inches.

All four girls ran the 4x200m relay with a time of 2:13.9. Throughout the season each girl has placed many times at different track meets along with beating their best times each week even though most meets mother nature took a turn for the worst.
