Gilpin Elementary student of the week Lisa Kunz 05/08/2008 - This week’s Student of the Week is effervescent Kristi Schmidt. Kristi, age 7, is in Miss Haley’s first grade class at Gilpin Elementary School. Young Miss Schmidt says her favorite subjects are math and “the work.” Part of “the work” is writing and she was excited to tell about a recent assignment. The day of this interview, she had just completed a writing assignment entitled: “My Red-Bellied Toads.” The toads are the pets of the whole first grade. Kristi enjoys watching the toads in the classroom and says she has learned a lot about toads by having them so close. The toads are named Miley and Lily. The names were chosen by the first grade students and, just a guess, there must be more girls in the classroom as the toads have the same names as the main characters in the movie “Hannah Montana”- a must-see for all young girls. True to form for most young girls, city or mountain, Kristi says her favorite movie is Hannah Montana. She saw it when it first came out but wants to see it again and again so she can memorize the songs. She describes the plot of the movie as Miley kissing a boy and then knocking him down with a twinkle in her pretty brown eyes. Kristi enjoys riding her new blue, purple and pink bike with her father in Coal Creek Canyon where she lives. Kristi also enjoys playing baseball and is practicing now for Gilpin County’s all-girl softball team. Their first game will be Saturday, May 17th. Kristi’s teacher, Miss Haley, said she nominated her because she “stands out in both her behavior and her classroom work.” Haley also said that Kristi “perseveres through any and all problems.” When asked what it is that helps her to be her best she replied: “big effort”. Congratulations Kristi, we are all proud of you and your “big effort” does pay off!
