Elementary student of the week Lisa Kunz 05/01/2008 - Gilpin County News is proud to announce that in conjunction with Gilpin County Elementary School Principal Lisa Schell and the dedicated teachers at the elementary level (K-6), we will feature a different student each week in our publication. The students will be chosen by the staff according to specifications set by the school. The criteria is described as “academic performance or improvement, citizenship and/or outstanding achievement” by Mrs. Schell. Each article will include an interview with the chosen student and their teacher, along with a photo of the student. We will feature one student each week through the end of the 2007-08 school year and will continue again once school starts in the fall. Pick up a paper each week to see if your student is featured!
This week’s Student of the Week is Colten Whiting, age 10. He is in Mrs. Joyce Campbell’s fifth grade class, and has shown outstanding citizenship along with great grades. Mrs. Campbell (who has been Colten’s teacher for both fourth and fifth grade) describes Colten as “supportive, considerate of others, hard working and multi-talented.” His favorite subject in school is math and he describes an exercise he just completed in Mrs. Manier’s math class as “fun.” The students had to calculate speed with a stop watch after running ten meters. This fondness for math easily translates into one of Colten’s other favorite activities - sports. Colten excelled in basketball this past winter and was one of the top scorers on his team. Colten is currently playing competitive soccer for the Colorado Edge soccer team. Playing soccer for the Edge team not only requires hours of practice and doing what it takes to stay in shape for such a demanding sport, it also takes the dedication of Colten and his whole family to get to practice and games in Arvada three times a week. Colten looks at the driving time as an opportunity to do part of the required homework necessary to keep his grades up. This Edge player can cover all positions except the goalie position and as such, has contributed greatly to his team’s 2-2-1 record. The season is still young and Whiting is predicting a great season for his team. When asked if Colten could provide any words of wisdom to his fellow students he replied, “Try to stay away from kids who can get you into trouble and you will be alright.” He also recommends Talladega Nights as a good movie, and his favorite actor is Will Ferrell. These are two sound recommendations from a boy about to turn 11 in May. Best Wishes to you Colten and thanks for being our first ever Gilpin County News “Gilpin County Elementary Student of the Week.”
