Fine Arts Festival

At Gilpin School

Lynn Volkens

04/24/2008 - Gilpin School celebrated Fine and Performing Arts this past week. On Thursday evening, student artwork from pre-school to 12th grade was displayed in the atrium. The two-story walls were turned into a gallery of watercolors, collages and drawings. Long tables held ceramic vessels and sculpture. Gilpin County Public Librarian Larry Grieco spent several hours reviewing and judging the artworks for First, Second and Third place holders and four Meritorious awards in each grade. As he was busy making notations, parents and community members milled around to admire the student creations. Art teacher, Curt Halsted mingled, answering questions about media, style, etc.

In the corner, the Middle/High School Choir stepped up on risers and serenaded the crowd with four numbers: “The Jolly Piper,” “Moon at the Ruined Castle,” “Music in You,” and the French Canadian Folksong, “Jamais On N’Avu” (Have You Seen). Vocal Music Director Ann Wyss said she’d originally picked the pieces “because they’re pretty,” but they soon became the students’ favorites. The choir is headed to Ralston High School to perform before judges at 9:00 a.m. on May 17th for the Music in the Parks competition.

Then it was off to the auditorium for the Middle/High School band concert. The ten instrumentalists recreated their award-winning performance from a competition they’d attended earlier this month, trophies proudly displayed stage front. Their numbers, “March Zuma,” “Air for Band,” and “Make a Joyful Noise,” had been selected to showcase the strengths of the individual musicians, said Band Director Jeanne Sonnleitner. The last piece is by James Swearingen, a favorite composer of Sonnleitner and the band.  As is her practice, Sonnleitner had different band members introduce each piece.

The week culminated with Performing Arts – the annual school play. This year that was a rollicking comedy, “A Pirate’s Life for Me” performed on Friday and Saturday evenings.
