Ned ski teams take sixth, seventh overallBarbara Lawlor 02/22/2007 - On Thursday and Friday, the Nederland High School Nordic and Alpines teams traveled over snow-packed, wind-blown, clogged I-70 to the Colorado State Ski Championships in Vail, the ultimate event of the high school ski season. The roads were so bad that the Summit County School bus had to have a police escort over Vail Pass because the road was closed. It was worth the trip. The Nederland boys team took sixth place overall of 15 teams and the girls took seventh place of 14 teams. These standings are a total of points earned in the Nordic skate and freestyle events and the alpine slalom and giant slalom meets. Each of the skiers had to qualify for state in the regular season and then compete in the events that took place last week. Nederland High School also took three slots in the top five Skimeisters. Jessica Hadford took first place for the second year in a row and sophomore Mariah Colton was the fifth-place Skimeister in the state. Senior Max Wheeler took third in the boys’ Skimeister competition. Erin McNary was named to the All-State team in slalom. Coach Sheila Ranegar was named Coach of the Year, a title that is voted on by the other coaches. “I was shocked,” said Sheila. “But the team did really well and we had a lot of fun, and that always seems to shine on the coach.”
Coach Ranegar said that when Jessica Hadford finished the last race of her high school ski career, the two of them hugged and cried. They’ve traveled a long way with each other and, together, reached individual awesome goals. Alex Clavette, Trevor Ranney, Sam Chapman, Ben Mullin, Jessica Hadford, Max Wheeler, Mariah Colton and Anika Petach skied for the Nordic team and Andrew Bukatko, Elek Cseh, Wes Varsos, Keegan Harris, Eric Ottosen, Wes Varsos, Tomi Arthur, Chandra Galbiati, Mariah Colton, Max Wheeler, Erin McNary and Sarah Gabel skied for the alpine team. - Girls’ Skate results: 16.
