Nordic teams head to StateBarbara Lawlor 02/15/2007 - On an overcast, 43-degree day, the Nederland Nordic team competed in its last regular season meet in Carbondale. On Wednesday the teams head to Vail for the State Championship and the Panthers are sending an all-time high of eight skiers who have qualified. “We typically have only three skiers who make it to State,” says Coach Sheila Ranegar. “Our kids are maturing.” Ranegar has coached the team for nine years and has worked with its three seniors for the past seven years. Alex Clavette, Jessica Hadford and Max Wheeler have grown and accomplished many goals while working with the Nordic Team. “Every year this team gets to be more fun,” says Ranegar. Sophomore Mariah Colton qualified for State in the skate event and was 3 seconds off qualifying for classic. This is her first year to make it to state competition. Sophomore Sam Chapman achieved his goal for the season and qualified in both skate and classic events. He is the fourth top boy on the Ned team in skating and third in classic, with two more years of growth ahead of him. Trevor Ranney, who has been finishing 7th and 8th, will probably end in the top 10 in state competition. The team will compete in the classic event at 9 a.m. at the soccer field east of the main parking structure at Gold Run. They will compete in the skate event at 3 p.m. on Friday. Awards will be presented Friday night at 7 p.m. at Battle Mountain High School. Carbondale Boys’ results
