Letters to the editor 02/15/2007 - Dear Editor, I attended Commissioner Nicholson’s fireside chat Thursday. This is what I got out of the chat. 1) Not one person in the room is in favor of the biomass heater at the road and bridge shop because of the cost, questions on payback, questions on availability of chips, and questions of a large wood burning facility located in a bowl surrounded by peaks. 2) After Commissioner Nicholson gave her reasons for supporting the project I asked, "Is there anything that would change your mind on the biomass?” Commissioner Nicholson answered, only if someone could show her scientific proof biomass is a bad idea or it would not work. 3) I asked Commissioner Nicholson, "If a majority of Gilpin citizens are against the biomass, would she change her mind?” Commissioner Nicholson answered NO! (Everyone in the room was shocked Commissioner Nicholson would admit that in public.) 4) Citizens in Gilpin County cannot wait another month. Once the foundation is poured, the County is committed to biomass. (Heat vents are to be placed in the floors for the hot water.) 5) The citizens of Gilpin County who are opposed to spending the money on the biomass need to send Commissioner Nicholson and Commissioner Whitman a clear signal on biomass and the related expense. 6) Everyone interested in restoring representative government to Gilpin County, call Del at 303-582-1045. Dear Editor, Help us explore our options for an alternative way of learning for those average to high achievers 3rd thru 12th grades We are trying to pull together all citizens of Gilpin County who may have knowledge and time to offer in exploring the options available to both our average and highly motivated Gilpin School kids. If you are interested, your child must have maintained at least a C average without any disciplinary problems. If you have any complaints about the school your child is currently attending, please take those matters up with your School's Principal. This will be a group who will diligently research our options and take action towards a positive future for our kids. We will be holding a public meeting soon, so please call Terrye Lovett at 303-582-3070, or email me at jonandterrye@msn.com to acknowledge whether or not you would be interested in volunteering, or if you think this might be a better way for your child to excel.
