Ice Hawks suffer bitter loss

01/04/2007 - With this new season, there is a new team to loathe.

rival Ice Hawks, Inferno, the Bombers and the Demons on the short list of teams that the mountain redshirts and their fans utterly despise.

Suncor defeated the Ice Hawks 6-4 in one of the chippiest contests that the Ice Hawks have seen in almost a year. The second period alone saw several trips to the penalty boxes on both sides as Black Hawk and Suncor accounted for twenty minutes in penalties. The referees nearly let the game get out of hand.

“They let a lot of things go in until the second,” said team captain Garrett Ladd. “The referees then overcompensated by calling everything, but by then things were pretty ugly."

Black Hawk's faithful also chimed in with their displeasure. An illegal crosscheck by Suncor's Gerry Tracy enraged the cheering section and many were calling for Tracy's immediate disqualification. However, the opposing player (and guilty party) had some words for the fans himself! Nobody is sure what was said; we’ll just leave it at that.

“A fight almost broke out over it,” said Ladd. “You don’t hit someone like that.”

Suncor never trailed in the contest after they soared to a 3-0 lead. With a comfortable cushion, they started in with physical intimidation, something that the Ice Hawks took exception to. Instead of retaliation, though, the Ice Hawks would just allow Suncor to shoot themselves in the foot. Two power-play goals were scored by Michael “Spike” Bryant, and David Young cut the deficit to a single goal. Sadly, that would be the closest the Ice Hawks would get as Suncor rattled off another three goals to seal the game. Goals by Joe Prudente and Tim Staples would help salvage some pride for the Ice Hawks.

“We won’t have any problems getting up for (Suncor) next time. You can count on that,” said Staples.
