Gould to wrestle in state tournament this weekend By Scott
Fuller Gould was the only wrestler for Gilpin County to participate in last weekend’s 2A regional qualifier, held Saturday at Akron High School. Gould fell to hometown favorite and Akron Ram team-member Mel Gebaur in a 13-2 major decision. Perhaps Gould’s most impressive display of the year came in a loss to Weld Central’s Robert Rutherford in the Kiowa Invitational on Jan. 24. The defeat was one of Gould’s most recent, but it also represented the final time Gould competed in a higher weight class than his own. He is bracketed in the 125-pound class for this weekend’s tournament. Gould’s first challenge in the state tournament will be Thursday against Travis Schwindt of Rocky Ford High School. Schwindt, a sophomore, lacks the experience of Gould, but has an impressive 28-17 record on the season. Gould, who has wrestled in far fewer matched this year, is 16-4. The exact time of Gould’s match Thursday has not been announced. He will participate in Session 1 of the tournament; the 2A and 3A preliminaries which will last from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Gould’s will participate first in bout #29. Tickets to the weekend’s events are available through Ticketmaster (303-830-8497 or www.ticketmaster.com) or, beginning Wednesday, on-site at the Pepsi Center Box Office. Admission is $9 for an adult, $8 for a child of 5-12 years, and $8 for a senior. Children under 4 will be admitted free.
