Gilpin boys score most points since Jan. 11, but fall

By Scott Fuller

2/10/2005 -
For the Gilpin County High School boys’ varsity basketball team, a 30-point night is something to write home about. The Eagles have topped 30 twice this season, and in both of those games Gilpin found a way to stay in the game practically until the final buzzer; losing by no more than ten points in each. The last game the Eagles reached the mini-milestone was on Jan. 11, when they lost a hotly contested home game to Brighton Charter. It stands to reason that 30 points would have been a reasonable and appropriate goal for their most recent game on Tuesday.

The Eagles did reach it, only to be drastically outreached by visiting Resurrection Christian.

Gilpin County lost what was, for most of the game, a decided outcome to the visiting Cougars 71-32 Tuesday night at Gilpin County High School.

Where the Eagles had been competitive in the beginnings of most home games this season, Gilpin struggled Tuesday. The pace for both teams was slow, but the Cougars eventually pulled away for a 10-2 lead after the first quarter. The damage only got worse in the second, as Resurrection posted a game-high 21 to Gilpin’s nine, and the Eagles found themselves down 20 at the half.

As usual, Gilpin’s third quarter was at least a little something to be proud of. The Eagles have proven to be most effective following the halftime rest but after they’ve had the first half to gain their footing. Tuesday night was no different, as Gilpin scored 11 in the third, but it was doubled by the Cougars’ 22.

Winless on the season, Coach Wright must prepare for what appears the inevitable reality of Gilpin traveling to Arvada to challenge state-championship contender Jefferson Academy in the first round of the postseason later this month. The Jaguars hosted the Eagles earlier this season, defeating Gilpin 100-80.
