Gilpin boy’s losing streak continues

By Scott Fuller

2/03/2005 -
The Gilpin County High School boys’ varsity team got off to a relatively good start Tuesday night; scoring 12 points in a first quarter for the first time in over a month, but was unable to sustain the effort in a 72-25 home loss to visiting Heritage Christian Tuesday night.

The Gilpin offense wasn’t entirely unproductive; shooting a respectable 10-of-26 from the field, but runs from the opposing Eagles late in the first quarter and early into the second took whatever momentum the team had built up over a long weekend.

For the second straight game, Gilpin County showed an impressive leniency towards offensive parity. Seven players scored at least two points in Tuesday night’s game. Junior Shane Vaughn led the team with five points, followed shortly by Anthony Cole and Neal Gillivan, who each had four. The trio combined to shoot 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from the foul line.

Gilpin’s lone run of the game came early, when an impressive 8-3 march by the Eagles had the home crowd buzzing. Gilpin pulled within 16-10 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter, but saw it slip away just as quickly.

Heritage would have no problem stifling that momentum as the quarter expired and well into the second, posting a 19-3 run in a ten-minute span which lasted until halftime. It essentially sealed the game for the visitors at the midway point.

Detrimental to the Eagle cause from the outset, was the play of Heritage threat Josh McGinnley, who scorched Gilpin for 28 points on the night. McGinnley hit three consecutive three-pointers in the game’s opening five possessions, and single-handedly took Gilpin out of the game as much as any single player could have.

The Eagles remain winless on the season and, at 0-12, are paying close attention to movement at the top of their division and prepare to travel to the league’s No. 1 seed in the first round of the District Playoffs.
