Gilpin boy’s losing streak continues

By Scott Fuller

1/27/2005 -
The Gilpin County boy’s varsity basketball team remains winless on the season following its 50-20 home loss to longtime rival Denver Academy Friday night.

Neal Gillivan with a reverse layup  Senior Neal Gillivan led Eagle scoring with seven points and junior forward Anthony Cole chipped in with three of his own, but Gilpin County was outscored by at least seven points in each quarter of Friday’s game, and posted no more than six in any one period in the loss.

The Eagles found themselves out of their most recent home game quickly; falling behind 23-7 midway through the second quarter following a 12-3 Denver Academy run late in the first quarter and early into the second. Gilpin would trail 25-10 at the half.

The Eagles appeared to have corrected their offensive flaws as the second half began, but the team again soon proved complacent as the third period came to a close. Excessive turnovers resulted in the visiting Mustangs taking control of the game late in the third, and Denver Academy finished the effort with a 6-2 run to close out the final minutes.

The Eagles will not have the benefit of ample practice time as they prepare for what will amount to the team’s biggest game of the year Friday January 28th, when both Gilpin teams travel across the pass to battle arch rival Nederland. They do so only after having made a quick road trip to Lakewood to battle Silver State on Tuesday.

Girl’s Junior Varsity Win!

The first game of Friday’s double-header saw the Gilpin County girl’s junior varsity team knock off the Mustangs 42-34. The Lady Eagles’ second squad never trailed in the game, and Junior Valerie Spellman scored a team-high 16 points in the win.
