Gilpin County students raising funds through
American Red Cross for tsunami disaster victims

1/13/2005 - Black Hawk, CO – Gilpin County high school students will be collecting funds towards the tsunami disaster relief effort this Thursday and Friday, January 13-14, 2005 at various county locations. Working through the American Red Cross, students will be located outside county buildings, in designated areas of Black Hawk and Central City and at the B&F Mountain Market in Nederland.

“We really feel that we need to do something for those people who have lost so much,” said Laura Aker, president of the National Honor Society at Gilpin County Schools. “With the president saying that people can donate money in the month of January and receive tax credit for their 2004 taxes, along with the American Red Cross indicating that 100% of funds raised toward this effort will go directly to those in need, we as students felt that we could help by raising as much money as we can.”

With the assistance from the district’s Parent Teacher Association, Booster Club, and Business Express, a printing company in Nederland, all materials produced for this effort have been purchased. Students will be prepared to provide receipts for those who request them.
